Equatorial (EQ)

An equatorial mount is a mount for instruments that compensates for Earth's rotation by having one rotational axis parallel to the Earth's axis of rotation. This type of mount is used for astronomical telescopes and cameras. Parallactic mount or German mount are also words used for an equatorial mount.

As the earth rotates around its axis, the stationary stars appear to move across the sky. A telescope on a properly aligned equatorial mount can be aimed at a celestial object and easily guided either by either manual slow-motion controls or by an electric motor. This is very nice for visual use and essential for longer exposure astrophotography.

Equatorial mounts can be equipped with a GOTO-system. The mount has been motorized and a database with celestial objects can locate any object with a push of a button!

An equatorial mount with an autoguide port (ST4-port) is well prepared for long exposed deepsky astrophotography.

Very important for mount selecting is carry capacity of the mount. Especially with astrophotography overkill is key! Because the slightest vibration will ruin your observation or astrophoto, it is important not to load up the mount up to its max. Better is to choose either a lighter instrument or a higher capacity mount.
