Binoculars

Robtics | BinocularsBinoculars or field glasses are two telescopes mounted side-by-side and aligned to point in the same direction, allowing the viewer to use both eyes (binocular vision) when viewing distant objects. Most are sized to be held using both hands, although sizes vary widely from opera glasses to large pedestal mounted military/astronomical models.

Unlike a (monocular) telescope, binoculars give users a three-dimensional(3D) image: for nearer objects the two views, presented to each of the viewer's eyes from slightly different viewpoints, produce a merged view with an impression of depth.

Optics have the property to turn the image upside down. Most binoculars use prisms to restore the image right side up. Binoculars with Porro Prisms have a shorter and wider construction. Binoculars with Roof Prisms longer and narrower in shape.

Each pair of binoculars have an indication such as 8x42, 7x50, 15x70, 20x80 etc. The first number indicates the magnification. The second number is the aperture of the lenses in millimeters. A 7x50 binocular magnifies 7x and has 50mm lenses.

The aperture of the lenses is of course the most important aspect of a binocular in astronomical use. The bigger these are, the more light falls in and the more you can see! Lower magnifications can still be used by hand, but it is highly recommended to use a binocular on a good and sturdy tripod.
